Why the Cornhole Game is Safe and Fun

If you haven’t noticed much in the past few decades of outdoor recreation and fun family time, the stakes seem to get higher and higher with each passing year. And with that increase in the stakes, there is also more inherent danger. Just the other day, a thirteen year old boy became the youngest to ever scale Mount Everest. Parents are pushing their kids through Little League baseball with such fervent support that younger and younger kids are turning to major surgeries, like Tommy John surgery just to be able to compete.

Even the more mundane games and activities seem to have a higher price and risk associated with them. As a result, many schools have decided to cancel them altogether. Remember dodge ball as a kid? You would be hard pressed to find that being allowed in any organized school activity, but when we were kids it was one of the best activities that we all looked forward to.

What is there to do?

Play sets and swing sets have become more and more intricate, complicated, expensive, and dangerous. They have grown taller, thicker, and with more features than ever before. And if you are watching more than one child at a time, then it may be difficult to see where all the children are in just one glance with complex play sets. If you want something fun and safe to do with your kids, something that will keep their interest for more than a few days, or hours, or minutes, then the cornhole game is certainly the answer. Not only is cornhole fun for everyone, parents and kids alike, it is safe.

There are no moving parts, no hard balls to worry about taking a bad hop, no line drives that could cause damage. Cornhole is a simple game that uses bean bags filled with corn feed and two cornhole boards as the targets. It is simple to keep the games organized and if a toss goes awry -which this writer has seen as recently as this past weekend when a young child attempted to throw the bean bag as far as he could, forgot to let go, and launched it into a crowd of adults eating, watching, and chatting away- no one will get hurt.

Cornhole is a lot like horseshoes, without the hard metal horseshoes

The cornhole game, in its essence, is much like horseshoes and the rules are very similar as well. It isn’t important to worry about the scoring or the rules to understand that instead of using heavy, hard metal horseshoes than can bounce, skitter, and roll their way into someone’s shin, catch someone in the head, or foot, or have any number of dangerous results, cornhole uses the soft fabric and makeup of simple bean bags.

Kids love using the bean bags because they are fairly light, easy to hold, and simple to toss. And they don’t have to worry about a throw going completely wrong for them, either. If it does, all they have to do is laugh, say their sorry, laugh some more, and try again. The cornhole game is ideal for everyone and is perfectly safe at all times.
