You are what you eat. This goes for birds as well as people. The pet bird food you will use is of vital importance to having a healthy and long living bird.
The only problem with pet bird food is that we don’t really know what each species or type of birds nutritional requirements are. The more time that passes the more we learn.
Birds go into 2 categories in the past. They were the seed eaters and the meat eaters. Since then a more variety diet has been used. Fruits and vegetables are fed to birds now. That is if they will eat them. Just like us humans, to much of a good thing is just plain bad. Variety is the key.
A bird has the fastest metabolism of all animals. This means they need more energy just to stay healthy and in good shape.
You should just provide a variety of wholesome foods for pet bird food. Commercial bird food that has been formulated to keep the little or big guy healthy is available and is recommended to feed to your bird.
You should also make yourself familiar of the birds natural habitat. By knowing this you can figure out what the bird would eat during what season.
A birds natural feeding behavior is to look for food in the morning. They eat what they can and store the rest in a “crop”. This crop stores the food allowing the bird to fly to another location that is safe from predators to digest the food. If you keep pet bird food or organic pet bird food in the cage all the time, the bird does not do its natural eating habits. This can result in the bird becoming bored and being very picky about its food.
Here are some tips to eliminate the boredom.
Put vegetables on a rod or stick. The bird will have to hold it to keep it from moving all around while they eat. Lace the food between the bars of he cage. The bird will have to unlace the food to eat it. You can cram food into all the cracks of a pine cone. the bird will have to forage to get that food out of it like it has to in the wild.
Do not consider pet bird food to be equivalent to dog and cat food. In other words. Do not make dog and cat food exotic bird food. Just don’t feed a bird that type of food. It will have ill effects on the birds health.
