The GOG Good Old Games Week, an initiative by GOG to spotlight its catalog of retro games, continues today with the addition of a beloved strategy classic. People’s General is now available on GOG, alongside several hidden gems from the Atari and MicroProse back catalog.
What’s this new GOG Good Old Games Week addition?
Last week, GOG launched the GOG Good Old Games Week initiative, which aims to highlight the site’s extensive retro gaming offerings. To kick that initiative off, GOG relaunched N64 classic Re-Volt, which was originally delisted from the site in 2014. Now, another beloved classic has appeared on the site: People’s General, a 1998 top-down strategy game in which you can play as either NATO or China in a fictional near-future conflict. It’s a simpler and more accessible game than many of its peers, and it even includes a scenario editor so you can make your own maps.
As well as People’s General, GOG has also added four classics from the Atari and MicroProse vaults that weren’t previously available on the site. These are retro flight sims Harrier Jump Jet, Dogfight: 80 Years of Aerial Warfare, and Solo Flight, as well as the influential 1985 strategy title Crusade in Europe. Rather excitingly, GOG says it’s got more surprises in store for the Good Old Games Week, so be sure to stay tuned for more info on that.
What is the GOG Good Old Games Week?
Announced on Friday, the GOG Good Old Games Week is an attempt on GOG’s behalf to spotlight “all the great classic games we have on GOG”, according to the site. The week will consist of a series of retro re-launches, including the aforementioned Re-Volt alongside Deadly Dozen Reloaded and a series of Throwback Entertainment titles. The promotion also features massive discounts on retro franchises like Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and Baldur’s Gate. This is in addition to games being added to the site as part of its regular injection of retro content, like The Wheel of Time, which was added last month.
You can check out the GOG Good Old Games Week right now over on GOG.com (unless you’re in Russia or Belarus, of course, where GOG has halted sales indefinitely owing to the Russian war in Ukraine). There’s bound to be something there for you if you’re a retro game enthusiast. We’re pretty excited to see what else GOG has in store for this retro promo, so of course, we’ll bring you more on that as soon as we get it.
